Beware of the rise of cheap imported electronic cigarettes

Do you know what you're actually vaping?
Or is it coming straight off of a cheap
production line somewhere in China?
Cheap imported e-cigs from China are on the rise – big time. You can’t go into a shop here in the UK without seeing a stack of cigarette-sized e cigs and ‘e juice’ next to or on the counter. Being a fairly experienced e-cig smoker myself, I wonder how many people are actually buying these things. It surely can’t be many, right? I mean, after a couple of hours of research on Google you’ll soon find popular electronic cigarette forums filled to the brim with posts about how ineffective, overpriced and frankly dangerous these cheap cigarette-sized imports are.

Well, imagine my shock when I read this piece of news today:

MultiCIG, whom I have never actually heard of beforehand, reportedly sells hundreds of thousands of e-cigs a month. Hundreds of thousands! That’s a heck of a lot.
Well, you may ask: what’s the problem?
The problem is that companies like MultiCIG, E-Lites, SkyCig and so on all simply import their crappy products straight from a Chinese conveyor belt and lump them on their website for sale. However, the bigger problem is that these companies do exactly the same for their e-liquids… which is where the real danger potentially lies.
A few months ago I actually looked into setting up a business and selling e-cigs myself. Obviously it’s a real money spinner, as they’re really taking off pretty much everywhere, but especially the UK. On my searches I found a cheap Chinese e-cig importer… complete with pictures of their factory line.
For your entertainment, here’s a link to thousands of e-cig sellers. http://www.alibaba.com/showroom/e-cigarette.html
You can even import some yourself, which is great right?!
Sure, if you have no morals. But what do morals matter anymore?
What exactly are these Chinese sellers putting into their e-liquid? How many hours are their workers working each day? How many safety measures are there to guard an accidental ‘overdose’ of nicotine (e.g. putting too much nicotine in a bottle)? How cheap are the ingredients they are using if they’re able to sell so many for so little?
In my experience, these slimline cigarette-sized e-cigs are a complete ripoff. One look at sites like the ones mentioned above and they simply look like they just want you to rip open your wallet and buy buy buy.
Fancy graphics, slick marketing sales copy, and you’re fooled – hey, I was fooled before too. The difference is that I was appalled with paying so much for a product that was garbage, so I learnt my lesson and did my research.
If you want my advice, find a relatively local supplier that makes their e-juices in-house or sells quality, reputable liquids. Grizwald from VapeEscape is one such supplier, and I recently had a fantastic experience with a small, growing e-juice maker who makes all of his e-juices in his own flat (apartment).  I would never, ever consider being ripped off for some disgusting imported juices now, not after I’ve tasted these.
At the end of the day, electronic cigarettes side effects are unknown. I’d prefer to give myself more of a chance of being safe and smoking quality e liquids, not cheap ones with who knows what in them.

Alice in Vapeland Twas Brillig, Bandersnatch, & Black & White Cookie - An honest review

To say I was excited about receiving my samplers of Alice in Vapeland's juices from switch2-ecigs is a bit of an understatement. After reading many reviews on the internet, I was hyped.

Now I'm not tasting expert. Many e-juice reviewers seem to see themselves as expert wine tasters, and write comprehensive reviews accordingly. I'm going to stick with the way I know how - I load the juice into my clearomizer, taste it, and then let it steep (rest) for a few days and taste it again. I'll then tell you what I think. There's nothing complicated - after all, it's just flavourings and a few standard chemicals, not years of growing the right plant and tenderly looking after it in a suitable climate (like wine tasting etc).

So, first up was Twas Brillig. Warm blackberry crumble was what it was meant to taste like... did it?

I guess in a sense it does. Not sure about the warm, but it's definitely fruity. It's by far my favourite, but I think it becomes quite sickly after a relatively short amount of time. I have yet to taste the crumble, and although the smell is nice, it does taste fairly different. Overall I'd give it a 3 out of 5 - it's okay, but nothing to write home about (or should that be write a blog about?). Kind of disappointing. At the price of almost £5 per 6ml (not sold in a bigger quantity here in the UK), it's also quite expensive too.

The next e-juice I tried was Bandersnatch. I'd been really looking forward to this one - butterscotch and banana, I love them. However, I failed to get barely any taste out of it. Just to be clear I used a Vision Clearomizer, and a BOSS clearomizer... both were the same. Barely any taste. Once or twice I thought I caught a hint of butterscotch, but other than that it was, well, nothing really. 1/5 - kind of a waste of money.

Last up was black and white cookie. I've been searching for a real chocolate tasting e-juice for ages, and yet again I'm let down. The chocolate is definitely there, but the whole thing just seems too thick for me. 1/5, and I won't be ordering anymore.

I just wanted to say that I was quite disappointed overall. I wondered if my setup was perhaps not working properly, but I've tried 3 different clearomizers and all the voltage option on my Ego Twist, and still got the same results (except for more harshness and throat hit the higher I went). I also tried out some Juicy Vapour Wake n Vape and that seems to be working fine - I can really taste it.

My conclusion is that I don't get on well with darker, heavier, thicker liquids, which these mostly were. So, my next order will be for some lighter juices, more fruity, candy, mentholy types.

I'd also like to round this off by saying I don't condemn these juices at all AiV has a great reputation, but for me the juices were very mediocre. As I've said before though, don't let me put you off of trying them!

switch2-ecigs.com review... wow!

I ordered from switch2-ecigs.com at around 1pm yesterday. I'd like you to bear that in mind as you read the next paragraph.

My package from switch2-ecigs.com arrive at 12:15 today (the time the post comes here)!

My delivery from them was less than 24 hours! Obviously, I'm very impressed - that's top service (take note all other aspiring e-cig vendors). Everything was correct, and included inside was a nice little note:

It's nice to receive a service with a little hand-written note - I like it as it makes such a difference than to today's soul-less mega corporations.

My cartomizer and 4 e-liquids were correct - 3 samplers from Alice in Vapeland, and a sampler of 'Wake n Vape' from Juicy Vapours. Apparently switch2-ecigs are the only vendors of this liquid, so we'll see how good they taste!

I'll be posting reviews of what I find them to taste like, but the main point of this blog post is to give switch2-ecigs a massive thumbs up for the prompt, accurate service. The postage was First Class signed for, and the delivery time might have been helped by the fact that I am about a 30 minute drive away from the vendor, but take nothing away from them, a less than 24 hour delivery time is exceptional.

Fantastic service.
