How Electronic Cigarettes Work

It seems fitting that one of the first posts should be to inform you exactly how electronic cigarettes work. If you've been wondering how something can seem so great, yet be so shrouded in mystery, then take the first step and find out exactly what lies within an e-cig.

This is for those asking themselves "how do electronic cigarettes work?", who are confused about all the contradictory information across the internet, or who are wondering how something so new can be so safe while replicating a real cigarette?

Well, you've come to the right place. This post provides a simple overview of exactly how e-cigarettes work, so you can understand what you're inhaling when you take a puff.

To start with, e-cigarettes comprise of 4 main parts, as follows:

1. LED Indicator
2, Battery
3. Atomizer
4. Inhaler

LED Indicator
This is always a small light at the end of the e-cigarette. The main function of the LED Indicator is to give you an idea of when you are smoking it correctly - usually, it will light up while you are taking a pull.

The LED Indicator also performs other functions, such as flashing a certain amount of times to let you know that the battery needs recharging or that the device is malfunctioning.

Battery
Usually the largest/longest part of the e-cigarette, the battery powers the whole device. Where the tobacco would be on a normal cigarette is where the battery is located. This powers the LED Indicator, Atomizer, and Inhaler,

The battery is usually the part you charge up, either by plugging it into a USB, mains or car charger.

Atomizer
In simple terms, the atomizer is where the nicotine fluid is kept. When you inhale using the Inhaler, the Battery heats up the Atomizer, which in turns heats up the nicotine, flavour and vapour. The atomizer usually sits inside the inhaler.

The atomizer is replaceable, disposable, and in some cases, refillable.

Inhaler
The inhaler detects when you take a puff of the c-cig, and then disperses the nicotine vapor into your mouth. This is always at the end of the e-cig where your lips would be, and where the filter would be on a normal cigarette.

Now you know what's inside an e-cigarette, how it works, and that it isn't magic - but pure science! Remember though - talking about atomizers to those not in the know may make you come off as pretentious, crazy, or both.
